Umesh TP, teacher of government lower primary school (GLPS) at Amrutapura, Chitradurga has built the school infrastructure slowly but steadily, he did not wait for the government to help him to improve the school, he did it with the help of locals and donors. This teacher bagged this year’s national award from the Union Ministry of Education.

Mr. Umesh got transferred to a village named Amruthapura 35 kms away from the district headquarters 12 years back.

Most residents belong to the backward Golla community here in this village. Even today it’s a backward village having no bus service, though there is a railway station, hardly any trains stop here.

Mr. Umesh says the school was in a poor condition when he arrived there, but it has slowly developed infrastructure including a building, toilets, drinking water, school compound and much more with the support of various organisations.

He has also written 6 books and get the state’s Uttam Teacher Award in 2021.

Apart from teaching, the teacher has put all efforts to create awareness in the community, to eradicate the system of segregation of women outside the village during menstruation in golla community.

Mr. Umesh will be presented the national award by the President today that is on 5th September at Vigyan Bhawan.
