Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest reigning monarch, passed away on Thursday at the age of 96, at the Balmoral Castle, her summer residence in Scotland, was announced by Buckingham Palace. Members of royal family were by her side at the time of her end.
During her reign span 70 years, she installed 15 Prime Ministers from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss becoming an institution and an icon.
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary born at 17 Bruton street, Mayfair, in London as first child of Duke and Duchess of York, on April 21, 1926, she was not born queen. Elizabeth ascended the throne aged 25 on February 6,1952, on the death of her father George VI.
Queen Elizabeth, broke many records as monarch, becoming an enduring symbol of the country over which she reigned for 70 years. Some commentators describe her reign as a ‘golden age’.
Her death automatically made her 73 year old son Charles monarch, though the coronation might not happen immediately. She is survived by four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great grand children.
Making a brief announcement, Buckingham Palace said, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow”.
