Twenty years old woman Ms. Sadala Karanamma, of Konda Reddi tribunal has taken a unique responsibility compared to any other woman amidst the 25 families which inhabit only the grassland in Andhra Pradesh.
Ms. Karanamma, a mother of two children, spends most of her time in the forest attending farm work. Last summer her family endowed a burden on her, she never imagined, to take care of two peacocks. Slowly there developed a strong bond between two and the peacocks became her children.
Ms. Karanamma’s in-laws found three peahen eggs in the broomstick field in the grassland of Maredumill forest of Alluri Sitarama Raju district.
Mr. Samireddy, relative of Ms. Karanamma, who involved in the collection of eggs and conservation of eggs, told “we have found three eggs which have been already hatched in the field. Out of three chicks one died and two have survived,which we brought home”.
This was the first attempt by the Konda Reddi tribe to domesticate the peacock. Konda Reddi tribe is the only Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG). The peacocks population is blooming in the grassland ecosystem.
The two peacocks have become friends of villagers. The villagers have declared that rearing the peacocks is purely for ‘entertainment’.
