The main reason for this change is globalisation. And the boom of social media. The rap industry in the US, struggled for decades to be recognised by the mainstream audience. Lots of gang wars and blood sheds happened among rappers in the west and east coast when the recognition and stardom came.
Emiway, Divine, Raftar, Krsna are all huge stars in the Indian music industry, they worked very hard. Came up with a phone connected to speaker playing beats in places like dharavi and other remote places. By constant hard work in YouTube and other social platforms. They got recognition. Now some of them are worth millions.
After the release of the movie Gully Boy, the craze grew and listeners of hip-hop in India are in insanely huge number. And the availability of the beats to practice and platforms to showcase their talent is easily available. Once to release an album cost lakhs of rupees. Now with the availability of free softwares like audacity and bandlab with the free samples to compose beats and easy way to master and render the files in digital media. Anyone can record an album with zero cost. And the thing is unlike jazz or pop, rap is an expression of fealing with the simple beats and Wordplay. Which makes it a self learning skill.
