The Hoysala temples at Belur, Halebidu and Somanathpua are India’s official nominations for inclusion as UNESCO world heritage sites,but some more temples which belong to same period may join the list as ‘the Sacred Ensambles of the Hoysalas’.
An expert team, including a representative from the International Commission on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and other officials is planning to visit the Hoysala temples at Belur, Halebidu and Somanathpur before submitting a report to UNESCO before declaring them as a World Heritage Site.
The team consists of ICOMIS expert, Tiang Kian Boom, Janwij Sharma, Additional Director General of Archeological Survey of India and Madan Singh Chouhan, Director, World Health Heritge. This team visits the state inbetween 13 to 17 of this month.
On September 14 the team visits 12th century Belur Chennakeshava temple, to Hoysaleswara temple of Halebid on 15 of this month 13th century Somnathpur Chennakeshava on 16 September. The team wants to dedicate whole day at each of the monument. Afterwards there will be a discussion with the Chief Secretary on 17th September, in Bengaluru.
The team would record its observation and have a discussion with the Chief Secretary and after that submit a report to UNESCO – Devaraju, Director, Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage said, “we are confident that the monuments will be declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site by May 2023” he added.
