Widespread heavy rain has been falling at various places in Tamil Nadu since morning due to westward wind speed variation. It has been raining intermittently since last night in Eraiyur, Akaram Sigur, Alatur, Veppanthattai and other areas of Perambalur district. Farmers are happy as the rains that have been sown during the last rains are suitable for rainfed crops including maize and cotton which are currently in the growing season. An average rainfall of about 24 millimeters has been recorded in the last 24 hours across the district. It has been raining heavily since the morning in Tirukovilur of Kallakurichi district, where it has been scorching hot for the past few days. Farmers are happy as strong winds and heavy rains accompanied by thunder are falling in various areas including Marketpet, Aaviyur, Gunnathur, Ariyur. Similarly, there is widespread rain in Villupuram district including Manampoondi, Devanur, Arakandanallur, Vadakkalur.
Due to heavy rains in Thanjavur district, Guruvai paddy fields which were ready for harvest were submerged in water. Due to the heavy downpour since midnight, rain water has entered areas including Kaparmillatnagar, Vallam Periyarnagar. The normal life of the public has been completely affected due to knee-deep water standing on the roads. 2 cottages collapsed due to rain. More than 50 vehicles were damaged and cattle were killed. In 10 villages, including Vidhyarayan Pett, Pudukalvirayan Pett, small paddy fields that were ready for harvest were drowned. Farmers have requested the government to provide adequate crop insurance to those affected by the rains.
Meanwhile, the Chennai Meteorological Department has informed that there is a possibility of heavy rain in Tamil Nadu from today for 3 days. It has been reported that 23 districts including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Dindigul, Theni, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Salem, Karur, Trichy, Pudukottai are likely to receive heavy rain. For Chennai, the sky will remain cloudy for 48 hours and there is a chance of moderate rain at a few places, the Meteorological Department has said.
