Karnataka ranks 4th in the country for the number of fatal road accidents. The report which was released early this week,has noted that Road Traffic Injuries (RTI) and deaths have been increasing at an alarming pace in Karnataka.
Former Director of NIMHANS G. Gururaj, who is the Chairman of Karnataka Health Vision Group as well as the Committee on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion told – RTIs occur mainly in the age group of 15 to 45 years, in economically productive population, in the poor and and middle income group of the society. These injuries cause a huge burden on the health system.
Dr. Gururaj said the Vision Report has recommended that the five pillars of road safety which focuses on road safety management – safe road infrastructure, safe vehicles, improving road user behaviour along with post accident care should be implemented to achieve road safety in the state.
It is everyone’s responsiblity including road contractors, vehicle manufacturers and people. Everybody should take care in designing the road safety with a goal to achieve no road accidents.
Apart from all these, the conditions of roads are still at a very high risk level with most of the roads not even are of basic quality and hazard mapping is still continuing – the report pointed out.
