As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Khadi festival was organised to pay tribute to the fabric and it’s importance during the freedom struggle. The festival took place on the banks of Sabarmati.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended this Khadi festival on Saturday in Ahmedabad and inaugurated a footbridge named Atal bridge across Sabarmati river connecting the eastern and western side of the city. When the PM arrived at the venue about 75,000 women Khadi artisans were spinning the charaka simultaneously.
In his speech, the PM gave a call to use Khadi products daily to help the country artisans directly and the country economy indirectly, he said Khadi was made the symbol of the country’s self respect by Gandhiji during freedom movement but after independence due to non prosecution Khadi and related industries in the country lead to their decline,adding to this he said that we have to support Khadi to make India developed and self reliant in the days to come.
He earnestly requested the Indian citizens to gift Khadi products during the coming festive seasons, he stressed the need to have clothes of different types of Desi fabric and give place to Khadi and then only the ‘vocal for local’ campaign will gain momentum.
