Several fish were found dead at Haralur lake in Bellandur, South-east Bengaluru, purportedly because of drainage water entry along with rain water in the city.
This is the second occasion of fish kill in the lake this year said the residents. From last two days the fish in the lake are dying because of polluted water, it happened after the recent heavy rains.
According to Raghavendra B Pachhapur, programme manager, Action Aid Association, this is the fourth incident in the last five year, every fish-kill is a set back for lake ecosystem and it is an indication that water quality is not good for fisheries and wildlife. He added Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) needs to strengthen quality of lake water.
But BBMP official from Department of Lake told that they used to clean the lake often and the dead fish will be cleaned soon. He added they will conduct an inspection to find out the reason behind the fish-kill.
Action Aid released a report recently shows that six fish kill incidents were reported in 2017 and 2018 but the numbers of death came down during the lockdown years. In total eight fish-kill instances were reported in Bengaluru lakes within seven months of 2022, which surpassed the annual fish-kill numbers during last five years.
In the last five years, 32 fishkill incidents were identified in the city. The BBMP should take serious action about the fish-kill incidents.
