Transport Minister B. Sriramulu told in the Legislative Assembly that Karnataka will have 35,000 electric buses by 2030.
Answering Tanveer Sait who wanted details on e-buses in Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) the Minister said as the diesel prices has been increasing day by day and the government was incurring losses, the Government wants all the buses to become electric by 2030 to get profits.
According to the Minister diesel bus incurs a cost of Rs. 68.53 per kilometre. As of now 90 electric buses are working in Bengaluru on a 12 year contract under the Smart Cities Project. This bus incur Rs. 64.67 per kilometre. He added, under the Union Government’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electrical vehicles (FAME)-II, out of 300 buses the BMTC had been given 75 electric buses which incur a cost of Rs. 61.90 per kilometre.
The minister told an order has been given for 921 electric buses through Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL). These electric buses will incur a cost of Rs. 54 per kilometre.
Electric buses are environmental friendly as they do not emit pollutants, lower maintenance due to an efficient electric motor, they give better performance.
