{"id":1055,"date":"2024-12-14T20:13:24","date_gmt":"2024-12-14T20:13:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.timesofmedia.com\/news\/?p=1055"},"modified":"2024-12-14T20:13:25","modified_gmt":"2024-12-14T20:13:25","slug":"meta-asks-california-ag-to-block-openais-conversion-to-for-profit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timesofmedia.com\/news\/meta-asks-california-ag-to-block-openais-conversion-to-for-profit\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta asks California AG to block OpenAI\u2019s conversion to for-profit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facebook\u2019s parent company Meta is supporting Elon Musk\u2019s effort to block OpenAI\u2019s conversion from a non-profit company into a for-profit one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Meta sent a letter to California Attorney General Rob Bonta arguing that allowing the shift would have \u201cseismic implications for Silicon Valley.\u201d And while the company asked Bonta to take \u201cdirect action,\u201d it also said Musk and former OpenAI board member Shivon Zilis \u201care qualified and well-positioned to represent the interests of Californians in this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf OpenAI\u2019s new business model is valid, non-profit investors would get the same for-profit upside as those who invest the conventional way in for-profit companies while also benefiting from tax write-offs bestowed by the government,\u201d Meta wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta has become one of OpenAI\u2019s big competitors in the AI market. Musk, meanwhile, was originally a co-founder at OpenAI before eventually splitting from the company, starting rival xAI, and taking legal action that includes seeking an injunction to stop its transition into a for-profit.
