TikTok is back online in the U.S. for the time being, but its future remains uncertain. While many apps have been scrambling to attract TikTok users and creators, a bookmarking backup service called Dewey has launched a solution that saves your favorite TikTok videos and allows you to access them at any time — even if TikTok disappears again.
Initially launched in May 2021 to help users organize their Twitter bookmarks (before the social network’s rebranding to X), Dewey has since expanded to include a variety of tools for backing up bookmarks and saves from other social media accounts, including Bluesky, Threads, LinkedIn, and Truth Social, as well as your browser bookmarks. Support for Reddit and Instagram is also in the works, according to the company’s website.
The team was prompted to refocus on TikTok ahead of its Sunday shutdown. Though President Trump extended the shutdown scheduled for Jan. 19 by 75 days, it’s unclear what TikTok’s future will look like. Will it form a joint venture with U.S. ownership to maintain its market share here or will it choose to exit the country if it can’t remain an independent company?
Dewey co-founder Tom Harari told TechCrunch the team began working on an emergency solution for backing up TikTok bookmarks last week and continued their efforts over the weekend to launch the new product. Notably, it’s the first time Dewey has supported a video-focused social network on its service.
With today’s launch of the TikTok backup solution, Dewey users can pull all their TikTok Favorites and Collections (folders for saved videos) directly into their feed, allowing them to save these videos forever — or for as long as Dewey exists, that is. TikTok Collections will also be given their own dedicated folders in Dewey’s sidebar for easy access.
